A Pessimistic World — But Not a Disconnected One: Is Global Economic Uncertainty Rising?

A new global survey has revealed a striking contradiction: people are increasingly worried about where the world is heading, yet they still believe countries need to work together.

The 2026 survey, conducted across 34 countries and more than 35,000 adults, found that nearly 7 in 10 respondents believe the world has become worse over the past year. Economic uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts and instability are weighing heavily on public confidence.

Economic Confidence Is Under Pressure

The uncertainty is particularly visible in expectations for national economies. Only 38% of respondents said they expect their country's economy to improve over the next five years.

India also saw a significant decline in economic optimism compared with the previous survey, although 50% of Indian respondents still expected economic conditions to improve.

For businesses and investors, this kind of sentiment matters. Uncertainty can influence consumer spending, investment decisions, trade flows and corporate expansion plans. At the same time, ongoing geopolitical tensions can affect energy prices, supply chains, currencies and financial markets.

Yet Cooperation Remains Surprisingly Strong

Despite the pessimism, the survey does not show people turning completely inward.

Around 57% believe countries should cooperate to solve global challenges, even when doing so requires compromising on some national interests. That figure is slightly higher than the 55% recorded in 2025.

Security appears to be the strongest common priority. Preventing wars and conflicts ranked as the top priority for international cooperation in 21 of the 34 countries surveyed and among the top two priorities in 33 countries.

The Message for the Global Economy

The findings suggest that the world's current mood is not simply about rejecting globalization or international cooperation. Instead, people appear to be demanding results.

The survey found that 81% would be more supportive of international cooperation if it demonstrated that it could solve global problems effectively, while 80% said the same if cooperation produced visible benefits within their own country.

That distinction could become increasingly important.

The global economy is deeply interconnected: energy markets influence transportation costs, conflicts can disrupt supply chains, and decisions by major economies can quickly affect businesses and consumers elsewhere.

A World Uncertain About Tomorrow

The biggest takeaway may therefore be the coexistence of pessimism and cooperation.

People are clearly concerned about the direction of the global economy and the wider world. But the survey also suggests that uncertainty has not eliminated the belief that countries can achieve more by working together.

The challenge for governments and international institutions will be turning that public support into visible, practical results—particularly in areas such as economic stability, security, trade, health and humanitarian assistance.

The world may be becoming more uncertain, but the desire for cooperation has not disappeared. The question now is whether global institutions can turn that demand into outcomes people can actually feel in their everyday lives.
